Your Seminar Instructors
Our seminars are presented by experienced instructors who work in many facets of the insurance industry. Some of our instructors come to us from the fields of law, dispute resolution, sales and marketing, and adult education. Regardless of their backgrounds, they share their extensive knowledge and experience to provide you with practical and relevant continuing education.
Brandi Anfield, CAIB has been in the insurance industry since 1998 and is the Personal Lines & ICBC Supervisor at Fawcett Insurance Agency in North Vancouver. She began her career as an Autoplan road runner and moved on to various office positions, including management at multiple brokerages. Then, after 10 years, she decided to make personal lines her specialty. She’s passionate about education and loves to provide brokers with refreshing and informal seminars, where open dialogue and participants’ opinions are important and valuable. Brandi has been presenting IBABC seminars since 2013.
Nick Batistic is a retired insurance broker who started in the insurance industry in 1963. During his career, he performed underwriting, claims, and field work with both national and international insurers. He moved to the brokerage side of the business in 1983, and spent over ten years as an account executive with a leading international brokerage. His final role was with Integro Insurance Brokers in downtown Vancouver. Nick specializes in commercial lines, including technology risks. He’s been presenting seminars for IBABC since 2003.
Mario Fiorino, BA, LLB, MED is senior legal counsel for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and is secretary and coordinator of the National Claims Committee. As a lawyer, author, and educator, Mario has worked with insurance professionals (insurers and brokers) in all Canadian jurisdictions, the United States, and Australia on technical, organizational development, and change management issues. He has been presenting courses and seminars for IBABC since 2002.
Debra Fitzsimmons, CAIB has been in the insurance industry for over 30 years, and is currently a marine-insurance broker with Western Financial Group. She began her career on the front lines of a large Prince George insurance brokerage as an Autoplan agent and then quickly moved into personal lines. A former IBABC board member, Debra has been authoring, editing, and facilitating courses and seminars for IBABC since 2005.
Alan Kavanaugh, BA, CRM, CCPI is Director of Loss Control & Risk Management at Noratek Solutions Inc. in Prince George. Since 1986, Alan has provided risk-management services to pulp mills, sawmills, school districts, school divisions, and municipalities throughout western Canada. He has specialized training and experience in fire-protection system analysis, playground audits, and in developing fire-safety plans. Before working with Noratek, Alan worked at Suncorp Valuations, RMS, as an independent risk-management consultant, as a loss-prevention engineer with Lumbermen’s Underwriting Alliance and, prior to that, he was a tank-troop commander in the Canadian Armed Forces. He’s been presenting seminars for IBABC since 2010.
Michael Mesic, BA, FCIP, CAIB, ACS started his insurance career in 2001 as an insurance broker in Port Alberni. He moved to the insurer side in 2007 and worked for Intact Insurance, ICBC, and in the claims division at Peace Hills General Insurance in Alberta. He returned to B.C. in 2020 and is currently a broker with Schill Insurance in Surrey. He’s also owner and president of Ensure Training & Education, where he’s actively involved in providing online classes for Fundamentals and CAIB students in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Michael has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Victoria, and has the FCIP, CAIB, and ACS designations. He has been presenting webinars for IBABC since 2019.
Jo Anne Mitchell, CIP is founder and operator of Effective Training & Communications Plus (E.T.C. Plus). Based in Oliver, B.C., Jo Anne has over 35 years’ experience in the insurance industry, including commercial lines and farms. A seasoned facilitator, she has trained thousands of insurance professionals across Canada. Jo Anne’s insurance career spans both a brokerage and company background, giving her a unique insight into the training needs of both groups. She has been presenting seminars and webinars for IBABC since 2006, and has contributed several articles to our HyperArticles program.
Melanie Needham, CIP, CRM is an insurance-industry consultant and educator. Based in Mt. Forest, Ontario, Melanie entered the insurance industry in 2000. She worked for the Economical Insurance Group as a commercial analyst, and now trains all levels of the Economical’s staff and prepares their course materials. She also teaches CIP courses and the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario licensing course. Melanie has completed both her CIP and CRM designations, and is in the final stages of completing her FCIP. In 2009, she obtained her Adult Teacher/Trainer certification with Conestoga College, and has twice won the IIO-Conestoga chapter Instructor of the Year Award. She also does much volunteer work within and outside of the insurance industry. She’s been facilitating webinars for IBABC since 2017.
Krista Prockiw, BEd, LLB is an in-house legal counsellor with ICBC. Previously, she was an associate with a prominent Vancouver law firm where she was a member of its insurance practice group. Her legal experience and expertise includes a wide variety of insurance matters, including personal injury, product liability and professional indemnity claims. She has also acted as associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Insurance Law. Krista obtained a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) from the University of Alberta in 1993 and, after graduation, taught English in Japan. Following her return to Canada, she obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia in 1998 and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1999. She has been presenting seminars for IBABC since 2004.
Carolyn Rennie, MSc. was a Habitational Team Lead with Cansure Underwriting in Salmon Arm prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Salmon Arm Chamber of Commerce in 2021. She began as a broker in 2017 and worked as a senior personal-lines broker at HUB international. Carolyn has a background in meteorology, with a Master’s of Science degree in Meteorology and a Certificate of Geographic Information Systems. Originally from Toronto, she was introduced to the insurance industry in 2014 while managing CatIQ, a company that analyzes insurance losses and natural catastrophes. Before that she worked for Environment Canada’s National Radar Program. At CatIQ, Carolyn presented many webinars to insurance companies on how to use mapping tools and analysis to compare insurance losses. Her passion for providing education grew even further when she hosted a Canadian Catastrophe Conference for two years. Carolyn has been presenting webinars for IBABC since 2019.
Scott Urquhart, BA, LLB is an associate at Owen Bird Law Corporation in Vancouver. He practices primarily in the areas of insurance coverage, civil litigation and construction disputes, but he also has successful trial and appellate experience in commercial and fraud litigation. He has successfully represented his clients, including corporate parties, insurance companies, their insureds, and individuals before all levels of BC’s courts, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, and the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal. Scott has a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia, and was called to the bar in 2006. He has been presenting webinars for IBABC since 2017.
